Tarzan by Harold Foster and Burne Hogarth  (1400-) 1st Appearance January 7, 1929, 1st Sunday March 15, 1931, 1st Hal Foster Sunday September 27, 1931, 1st Burne Hogarth Sunday May 9th, 1937 - The presentation of Tarzan in the daily and sunday comics page was as much about the art as it was about the stories.   The origins of the strip go back to the novels and classic stories by the prolific Edgar Rice Burroughs, one of the most famous of early popular-culture writers.   The popularity of those offerings became the impetus to bring Tarzan to the daily comic page.    A young Harold Foster supported by Rex Maxon created picture and text dailies which were direct adaptations of Burrough's novels.  Those were received well with the public, which made the call for a sunday color version.  The originating artists reversed order with Maxon starting the effort, soon to be taken over by Foster.  Foster developed his superior style on Tarzan, although he kept the presentation conservative and constrained to standard frames for the most part.    He would leave the strip in 1937 to create his true masterpiece, Prince Valiant.   The choice for his replacement was a young Burne Hogarth.  Again Tarzan would be the vehicle for another grand master of cartooning to develop his style.    Under Hogarth, Tarzan became a study in physique presentation in motion.   The quality of movement that Hogarth added through his highly detailed drawing of sinew gave Tarzan a dynamic quality that was truly unique in comics.  Burne Hogarth gave us two long stints of his mastery, which only got better with time.  The third grandmaster of cartooning to work on Tarzan came in the late 1960's when Russ Manning agreed to take over the duties.   In many respects Manning's stint was the highest quality,  combining the motion qualities of Hogarth with superior mood presentation through wonderful shadowing.  Sadly, carraige of the strip waned with the popular trend away from adventure comics, but it still runs today and is very popular overseas.  The market for Tarzan is very good.  Sunday fulls, especially those with logos are very good sellers at modest premium.  High premium pages are any from the brief early Maxon stint on the sundays and the earliest 1931 Hogarth sundays.   Firsts for Hogarth and Manning also command high premium.   Early dailies including the first set created by Foster demand a high premium as well.  Common dailies and sundays also sell quite well.
