Little Nemo in Slumberland (In the Land of Wonderful Dreams) by Winsor McCay  (0840-) - 1st Appearance October 15, 1905 - Winsor McCay created Little Nemo in 1905 although some of the characters in the strip date back as early as 1903 in some of McCay's earlier creations.  Little Nemo is certainly considered to be one of the finest comic strips ever produced.   Winsor McCay was first an entertainer, as such he would purposefully attempt to a awe and astound with every sunday offering he created.   Exceedingly talented, McCay would install a fair amount of wit within scenes of wide panoramas with exception eye-appeal.    The result would be detailed masterpieces whose quality has been rarely equaled.  McCay would send Nemo and his friends, Flip, Jungle Imp (Impie), and Dr. Pill to fabulous destinations of imagination, the sea, the Moon, Mars, cross-country USA and Canada.   The long sojourn on Nemo's airship show McCay's ability to combined exception detail with bright vibrant color.   The trip would last until mid-1911, when McCay would lay down his strip for a hiatus in a battle with his syndicate.   McCay would indeed switch publishing syndicates on his return in late 1911.    In so-doing, he would temporarily lose the rights to the Little Nemo title but would continue under the title 'In the Land of Wonderful Dreams'.   For the next two/three years, Nemo would find his way into the doings of Mother Goose's characters, Lilliput and pre-Historic lands.    In 1914, McCay would put his characters down for over a decade as he pursued other interests including vaudeville and animation.   He would return to them one last time for a short stretch in 1924-1926.  Subsequent short sporadic revivals would then be left to McCay's son, Winsor Jr., in the 1930's and 40's, or reprints of the originals.   The market for Little Nemo is strong at very high premium.   The strip was offered mostly as fulls.  Halfs and Tabs exist of the later revival pages.   Isolated pages, especially within the first stretch of the strip, are considered exceptional masterpieces and command a very high premium.   Those include The Mars pages, Nemo's walking bed page, and the Ice Castle sequence.   Later pages which contain McCay's Dinosaurs, all of which strongly resemble his animation creation Gertie the Dinosaur, command a high premium as well.    Make no mistake, even common pages sell very well at the highest premium.

A Note on Winsor McCay's dinosaurs   Some of the following pages contain Dinosaur depictions which are obvious Gertie the Dinosaur prototypes.  For those of you unaware - Winsor McCay was also the father of the animated cartoon - his Gertie the Dinosaur is considered by historians as the first true 'cartoon' - this is up for debate - but even if it's not a true 'first', it's significance and brilliance is undeniable.  If you are fortunate enough to have seen it - you'll quickly notice the resemblance between the 1914 movie dinosaurs and these 1913 Little Nemo Dinosaurs.
