| Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris & Walt Disney Studios (1520-) 1st Sunday October 14, 1945 - The classic stories of the Briar ("Brer") Patch by Joel Chandler Harris came to life in Disney's feature film "Song of the South". Even in 1945 Disney would never turn down the opportunity to cross-advertise a venture through different mediums, thus the sunday feature Uncle Remus was created. The Briar Patch is full of characters,but the main interaction is between the energetic Brer Rabbit and his antagonists Brer Fox & Brer Bear. Together, they meander through weekly episodes of mild humor with a little continuity mixed in. The feature was quite popular and lasted about 20 years. Insensitive portrayals of African-American characters within the movie caused the Disney Corporation to remove it from distribution on a permanent basis. Related items including books, records, comics and even theme park rides were removed or re-themed. Essentially they are banned with no re-introduction in sight. Paradoxically, Uncle Remus comic strips are becoming somewhat attractive due to their historical significance and prospects of future rarity. Offered exclusively as Halves or smaller, collectors look for runs where available. | ||||
