Red Ryder by Fred Harman (1190-) 1st Sunday November 6, 1938, 1st Daily March 27, 1939 - Red Ryder was by far the most popular of the western comic strips not based on a real-life actor like Gene Autry.    Red Ryder and his sidekick Little Beaver roamed the Colorado Hills making his meager fortune and bagging villains that stumbled along his way.   Fred Harman was the creator of Red Ryder.   Fred had shown his outstanding artistic abilities on his earlier strip Bronc Peeler that featured the incredible 'On The Range' western scenes.  Those scenes were nothing less than classic and he brought the authenticity that they portrayed over to the scenery that Red Ryder walked.  The storylines were typical 3-4 month range, Red was the crack shot who was also good with his fists.   If he was outnumbered, Little Beaver was the politically incorrect bail-out.  Fred Harman bought into the Paper Doll craze to a moderate extent by featuring Little Beaver Cut-outs frequently.  In addition, Red Ryder was fully integrated into other forms of medium which included books, movies, and marketing premiums.   As portrayed correctly in the classic movie 'A Christmas Story', Red Ryder BB-Guns were indeed immensely popular in their time   The strip was strong through the 40's and 50's but ill health took Fred Harman and the strip's motif wained in the 1960's.   The market for Red Ryder is moderately strong.   Offered mostly as Halves or smaller, Full-Size pages from the early first 4-5 years exist which gloriously display Fred Harman's outstanding early artwork.   Those Fulls rate a high premium and are highly sought-after - although most other sizes sell quite well regardless.   Dailies sell about as quickly as Sundays.
