Prince Valiant (In the Days of King Arthur) by Harold (Hal) Foster (1160-) 1st appearance February 13, 1937 - Harold Foster made a name of himself with his wonderful 5-year run on Tarzan, but he was not the only artist on that classic feature (he split time on dailies and sundays with Rex Maxon).    In 1937 he decided to create his ultimate masterpiece, Prince Valiant.    From the very onset, it was obvious that Prince Valiant was special.    A sunday-only strip, Harold Foster put extraordinary time and effort into making each week's submission a masterpiece of both story and artwork.  He purposely avoided the use of word balloons to differentiate Prince Valiant and give it an air of serious story-telling.   The artwork was panoramic with fabulous scenery of medieval Europe.   The stories were hard-hitting and sharp.  Although he spared the blood and gore of the period on his readers, the realities of the times were firmly placed in the stories.   Villains were heinous and self-serving to a high degree.   The hero was Prince Valiant, prince of Thule a northern continental monarchy with plenty of enemies.   Valiant's adventures progress him through the aging of his life.   During the run of the strip he would marry and would sire an heir as any monarch would hope.   These personal storylines were incorporated into many an adventure giving the stories an greater immediacy.    So marvelous was the strip, that it was one of the few strips that was granted full-page status in many newspapers subsequent to World War II (and would last on some into the 1970's!).     The market for Prince Valiant is a bit two-faced, very good for Full-size and Tab versions, only fair for half-size or smaller versions.    Premium pages are any of the first year pages,   most any with oversized panorama panels, and those which mark the personal landmarks in Val's life.
