The Katzenjammer Kids(Shenanigan Kids) by Rudolph Dirks & Harold Knerr (0740-) 1st Appearance December 12, 1897 - The antics of Hans & Fritz was the first true comic strip in terms of a weekly series of continuous cartoon panels with word balloons.   Rudolph Dirks was the first cartoonist on the strip.  His classic early work saw him create a weekly tale of woe for 'Der Captain' 'Die Mama' and 'Die Inspector'.     The strip had a dual life starting when Dirks left the title in 1914.   The strip was taken over by Harold Knerr who would soon send all of the characters on a  multi-decade world tour.    The strip thrived under Knerr until his death in 1949 when the strip began to be passed to a multitude of other cartoonists.   The strip remains alive today although it is not carried in nearly as many papers as it was in it's heyday.  The market for Katzenjammer Kids varies depending on the era of the strip.   The earliest Dirks pages are rare and sell very well in most any condition and size.    The Knerr era strips through the 1940's sell well also, although the prices of those are somewhat less thanks to ample supply (A lot of newspapers carried the strip during this period).   The post-Knerr strips beginning in the 1950's sell fairly well, but usually to completists. A note about the Katzenjammer Kids & Captain & the Kids - In June 1914 Rudolph Dirks, creator of the Katzenjammer Kids, switched from the Hearst Syndicate to the World Feature Syndicate.   In a court battle, Dirks was allowed to continue producing the kids, but the name 'Katzenjammer Kids' was awarded to Hearst.   From the end of 1914 onward, 'the Kids' would be produced by two totally different artists working for different syndicates.   Dirks would begin producing the strip under various titles, but eventually would settle on 'Captain and the Kids'.  In November 1914 Hearst would hire Harold Knerr and continue the strip under the 'Katzenjammer Kids' title.   To see post-1914-switch Dirks offerings, check out my listings for 'Captain and the Kids'.
