Dick Tracy by Chester Gould  (0390-)  1st Appearance October 4, 1931  - The era of the Great Depression was also the era of the Gangster Headline. Out of the headlines of Al Capone and others came the premise for Dick Tracy. The creation of Chester Gould first hit the comics on October 4, 1931.  Dick Tracy’s stories were ground in realism. Thanks to the Dick Tracy, the kids of the Great Depression would learn that crime did not pay. Many ruthless villains would pit themselves against Tracy and many would also meet their doom because of it. Death and violence from the criminal world permeated Dick Tracy, and kept the close attention of the reading public.    The very early strips of Dick Tracy are very rare. When they are available, they command a very high premium and usually are scooped up quickly. Sunday Fulls ran into the early 40’s and sell very well. In the War years Gould started generating his most famous comical villains and side-characters by the hoard.   Early pages with characters like Flattop, The Brow, Breathless Mahoney and Gravel Gertie (and more), sell at a high premium as well. Runs of the title sell quite well into the 1970’s. Dailies are also quite sought-after and command a modest premium
