Brutus by Johnny Gruelle (0190-) 1st appearance Sunday November 17th, 1929 - From the magical pen of Johnny Gruelle, creator of Mr. Twee Deedle and Raggedy Ann, Brutus was Gruelle's longest running comic-strip creation.  Brutus was a rounded-shaped, somewhat witless married man who had a habit for getting into slapstick trouble.    His ability to get into mischief was only matched by his devotion to his wife Cleo.   Many of these pages were devoted to Brutus' scheme to better-provide for her.  In most strips, there was room for a wisecrack remark from his many dogs and cats who had the keenest senses of observation in the house.  The formula jelled into a delightful strip which is rough enough around the edges to keep readers coming back. Because of Johnny Gruelle's status as one of early comic's grand masters and due to a somewhat low number of newspapers carrying the strip, Brutus sells exceptionally well at a high premium.  Regardless of the size of the pages, these are very hard to keep in stock.  (37)
