The Brownies(Brownie Clown of Brownietown) by Palmer Cox (0188-) 1st Sunday Comic appearance 1903 - The lineage of the Brownies can be traced in print as far back as 1879 as a magazine feature.   The Brownies are a small society of faerie-like people who get into their own brand of mischief.   Designed as children's stories,   the Brownies were created by Palmer Cox,  one of the pioneers of pop culture.   Throughout the late 19th century and into the early 20th century,  the brownies would appear in magazine and book form with their adventures spanning the globe.   In their day,  The brownies were very popular and were heavily represented in merchandising.  Plates, Postcards, Games and even the Kodak Brownie camera were named after them with sales success.   It wasn't until 1903 that Cox brought his creations to the relatively new medium of the Sunday comic page.   The Brownies sunday comics were whimsical in nature similar to the later Teenie Weenies and Mr. Twee Deedle.  The strip was disjointly printed into early 1908 which means that these are quite uncommon.  They command a high premium to serious collectors.
