| Famous Fiction by Chad Grothkopf (0505-) 1st Appearance 1942 - Adaptations of classic literature sporadically appeared on the newspaper comics pages since the 1920's, perhaps even earlier. Beginning in 1942, Chad Grothkopf, the head of a fledgling art studio, saw profit in following suit. The sunday strip started under the title "Famous Fiction', although that title would shrink and finally disappear. The adaptations were simplified to usually last 2-3 months each. The artwork by Grothkopf was very clean. Paper Dolls were added in 1943 to boost subscriptions. Unfortunately, that only helped for awhile and the strip ended in 1946. The market for Famous Fiction is good. The more popular the book that was being adapted, the better the strips sell. (27) |
