| Uncle Remus by Joel Chandler Harris & Walt Disney Studios (0865-) 1st Sunday October 14, 1945 - The classic stories of the Briar ("Brer") Patch by Joel Chandler Harris came to life in Disney's feature film "Song of the South". Even in 1945 Disney would never turn down the opportunity to cross-advertise a venture through different mediums, thus the sunday feature Uncle Remus was created. The Briar Patch is full of characters, but the main interaction is between the energetic Brer Rabbit and his antagonists Brer Fox & Brer Bear. Together they meander through weekly episodes of mild humor with a little continuity mixed in. The feature was quite poular and lasted about 20 years. During this time, the movie that spawned the strip was allowed to fade to relative obscurity, largely due to misconceptions regarding it's social correctness. A revival occurred when Disney Imagineers invented the fabulous "Splash Mountain" ride at it's theme parks. This has re-introduced these marvelous characters to a new generation of eager readers. This is part of the reason why the market for Uncle Remus strips is quite good. Offered exclusively as Halves or smaller, collectors look for runs where available. | ||||

| Uncle Wiggily's Adventures by Howard Garis & Lang Campbell (0870-) 1st Appearance January 30. 1910, 1st Sunday 1919 - Uncle Wiggily was born in the early days of newspaper comics when whimsical fairy-tale themes were some of the most popular strips. Uncle Wiggily had the look and feel of a story book, in fact the dailies were not comic-strips but were text columns often titled "Bedtime Stories". The Sundays, drawn by the extraordinary Lang Campbell started by using text under panels in similar fashion to Mr. Twee Deedle. For all of this, the actual content of Uncle Wiggily was quite often far away from a Fairy Tale. Uncle Wiggily was a somewhat elderly rabbit who would find his way into and out of trouble each week. The trouble would often come in the guise of naughty villains of the wood, but just as often it would be Wiggily's own curiosity that would fix him. Wiggily's woods was actually quite a modern place with the conveniences of the day and the problems that accompany them. The result was a strip that, to readers in-the-know, is quite surprising. The market for Uncle Wiggily is very good. The Original Lang Campbell pages are the most called for, offered as Fulls and Tabs, the fulls are high premium pages - earlier the better. Dailies sell very well also. | ||||
