S'Matter Pop (Say, Pop!; Nippy's Pop) by CM Payne  (0720-) 1st Appearance 1910 - S'Matter Pop is the story of Pop, a father and husband and his struggles to survive domestic life.  Pop's family, a pestering wife and decidedly undomestic son were the co-stars of the strip.   The strip was exclusively a gag strip.   Each day or week, Pop would be confronted with everyday life, a situation that he was somewhat ill-equipped to handle.    Slightly dull-witted and decidedly unexperienced, Pop's resolutions to his problems would invariably bite him in the end.   Inspite the terribly common theme of the strip, S'Matter Pop still stands out because of the rather unusual and quite superior artwork.   Payne's characters were portrayed with exaggerated dimensions which have a decided eye-catching appeal.    Unfortunately, those character portrayals were exclusively confined to self-imposed standard cartoon blocks, which limits the effect.   The market for S'Matter Pop is moderate.   Collectors gravitate to Full-color fulls when available.  Daily sell a little slower than the sunday version.

Smilin' Jack (On The Wing) by Zack Mosley  (0725-) 1st Sunday October 1, 1933, 1st Daily June 15, 1936 - Smilin' Jack was the story of Jack Martin and his round-the-world escapades as a pilot, both military and later commercial.   The strip drew it's original popularity from an era that was fascinated with the airplane and flight.   Zack Mosley, it's creator, rode and partook in that wave.  He was very much an airplane enthusiast and kept up with the technological advances.  Those advances invariably made it into the pages of Smilin' Jack.   The theme of the strip was adventure and crime-fighting.  Jack was the resourceful and fearless center of the strip although he had sidekicks named Fat-Stuff and Pinfeathers to bring in some comic relief.    Smilin' Jack would span the globe stopping smuggling and other crimes in 3-6 month continuous storylines.   The quality of the stories is what kept the strip going for some 40 years, certainly the most popular of all aviation strips.  Most storylines had an element of personal drama usually affecting the lovelife of the dashing Jack Martin.      The market for Smilin' Jack is moderate.   Collectors look for the rarer first year strips, especially the short-lived "On the Wing" versions from 1933.   Dailies actually move better than sundays.

Smitty(Bill the Office Boy) by Walter Berndt (0730-) 1st Appearance 1922 - Smitty began as the story of a young man's escapades as a office boy, but eventually evolved into a strip about all aspects of  adolescent life.   Smitty was a smart, brash and morally upright boy who found his antagonists in every locale he went.   The strip was a gag strip, with each daily or sunday carrying it's own punchline.    The comedy was light as was the artwork creator Walter Berndt.   Berndt made sure that Smitty stayed pure to the gag mentality, rarely departing into anything close to a social message.  As such, Smitty is endeared by it's fans for it's simplicity.  The market for Smitty is a bit slow.    Asked for by completists almost exclusively, the dailies move a little quicker than sundays, but only at a modest discount.

Smokey Stover by Bill Holman  (0735-) 1st Appearance March 10, 1935 - Smokey Stover was the wacky creation of Bill Holman, a cartoonist of single-panel gags up to that point.  Smokey Stover was a fireman is the zaniest firehouse that you have ever seen.   The alarm in the firehouse was rarely for a fire.   More often it would signal the bit of nonsense that would highlight the day's strip.   Within the contents each sunday would be a number of pictures-on-the-wall which were as silly as the storylines.   The artwork of Bill Holman was motion oriented and somewhat disproportionate.   This added to the oddness of the characters and to the enjoyment of the strip.   There was no continuity, it was strictly gags and those gags were excellent. Smokey would occasionally be coupled with Spooky, an equally funny side strip about the firehouse cat.  The market for Smokey Stover is moderately good.   Sundays move at a steady pace from most all eras of the strip.   Dailies were sparsely issued and sell very well.

Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs by Walt Disney (Studios)  (0740-) 1st Appearance December 12, 1937 - In association with the release of the historic and classical Disney movie, a 20-week print version of the story was created for the Sunday Comics pages.   This abridged offering was very charming and delightful unto itself.   It ran true to the movie storyline where Snow White escapes the grasp of the wicked queen at the house of 7 mining dwarves, each of which has a particular harmless character aspect (Sleepy, Dopey, etc.).   The artwork of the strip is that classic clean and wonderfully detailed Disney Studio style.  The series was most often printed with Mickey Mouse, temporarily eclipsing Silly Symphonies as Mickey's co-strip from the newspapers.  The success of the feature would pave the way to similar presentations of other Disney classics in the comics such as PInocchio and Bambi.   Offered as Tabs, Halfs or half-tabs, the strips sell extremely well and are very sought-after in any size.
