Reg'lar Fellers by Gene Byrnes (0675-) 1st appearance  1917, 1st Sunday November 1920 - Reg'lar Fellers is the story of Jimmy Dugan and his gang of adolescent miscreants surviving and enjoying city life.  Reg'lar Fellers was a high quality gag strip which tried to reflect the working class lifestyle of 2nd generation immigrants in the big city.  Innocent gang pranks and alleyway games were the subject of the day.   The artwork of Gene Byrnes showed characters that were clean and minimal, but usually with plenty of action portrayed.  Byrnes gags were light by today's standards, but in the pre-World War II era, they were stinging wit.  They were good enough to allow for a 30-year run and to make the strip a model for future kid's strips.  Reg'lar Fellers has a niche market with collectors and professionals alike.   Both dailies and sunday sell OK at standard prices for their era.

Right Around Home (Myrtle) by Dudley Fisher (0680-) 1st appearance 1935, 1st daily May 26, 1941 - Some of the greatest cartoonists of all such as Frank Godwin worked on vignette-style strips, but the master of the strip was undoubtedly Dudley Fisher.  Fisher was already a cartoonist and artist of some note when he created Right around Home in 1935.  Right around Home solidified the style with a focus on the scenes of the common family - which made the strip very popular to adult readers.    The strip had a star in the youngest daughter of the family, the precocious Myrtle.   Her antics added a dimension of attraction to the younger readers.   Given the limited space of the daily strip, making that her personal playland was smart decision.   Although the strip lasted into the 1960's, the reduction of size in most strips beginning in mid 40's hit this strip very hard.   Fisher and his successors tried to compensate for reduced sizes by reducing panorama spacing.   The gag quality remained sharp but the visual appeal wained because of this.  The market for Right around home reflects this change.   The full-size full-color gems of the early days of the strip have a moderately strong demand, while the later smaller strips tend to move only at discount.   Dailies are slower movers, usually asked for by the nostalgic or the completist.

Ripley's Believe it or Not  by Robert Ripley (0685-) - Robert Ripley was a a single frame artist of of minor note in the 1910's who happened to have a passion for exotic travel.  After meandering through more than a decade of relative obscurity, Ripley was persuaded to attempt a frame centered around some of the more unusual sights that he had seen.  That frame became Ripley's Believe it or not which is the signature strip of the odd and unusual.   By the early 1930's the strip was writing itself thanks to the contributions of thousands of letter-writing fans around the globe.  The strip started in many papers as a black and white daily and sunday.    The sunday strip soon graduated to the front or back page of the magazine section for a few syndicates giving it even more exposure.  It finally reached the color comics section in the later 1930's.   The phenomenon that Ripley created expanded into pop culture through books, magazines, TV and even Themed 'Museums'.    The market for Believe it or Not is actually fairly good.   Offered mostly as halves of smaller, magazine section-front fulls exist from the 30's and sell at a modest premium.  Other than those,  collectors look for runs where available.    Dailies sell equally well as sundays.   Because of the nature of the strip, these were fodder for quite a few scrapbooks in their day.    If in good condition, those scrapbooks actually retain the loose strip value.

Room and Board by Gene Ahern (0687-) - 1st appearance 1936, The story of Homer Augustus Puffle is a direct take-off of Ahern's earlier success, Our Boarding House.   Set in a boarding house. Puffle was the central character, a retired judge whose days of the past were the fodder of epic boasts.    The action of the strip was the judge usually trying to find a way to enjoy his recreation, in spite of his wife Nora.   Both the dailies and sundays were gag strips although the was occasional short-lived continuity when Puffle was telling tales of his past to the kids of the boarding house.   Generally recognized as inferior to Our Boarding House, Room & Board was still very funny.   Ahern may have toned down his acidic humor in this strip, but he did not lose his wonderful sense of irony.    The market for Room & Board is good.   Both dailies and sundays sell OK at standard gag strip prices.

Roosevelt Bears, The by Paul Piper,  V. Floyd Campbell & RK Culver (0690-) - An obscure but historically important strip, The Roosevelt Bears was the epitome of pop culture in the early 20th century.   Drawn from the popular depiction of the president of the day, Theodore Roosevelt, the Bears was a high quality sunday-only page showing a family/group of bears encountering scenes of modern life (most of which were actually enountered in Roosevelts life).   The storylines were often given in verse which added to the charm of the pieces.   Inspite the presidential depiction, the pages are not intended to be serious political commentary.  They are light satire, with virtually no connection with newsworthy events of that era.   Each page was drawn beautifully and stand alone as masterpieces.  These are also some of the rarest pages on the market.    As such, they warrant one of the highest premiums of any pages from that era, similar to McCay's Nemo and Denslow's OZ pages.
