| Peter Rabbit by Harrison Cady & Thornton Burgess (0620-) 1st apearance 1912, 1st Sunday August 15, 1920 - Peter Rabbit was originally created in a single illustrated text column called Bedtime stories in similar fashion to Uncle Wiggily. Created by Thornton Burgess, the column was a daily short fable which usually had an added moral. Peter Rabbit would consistently get into some mischief that he had to resolve before the end of the day. The sunday strip was developed by the illustrator of those dailly text columns, Harrison Cady. In the Sundays, the formula did not change although the illustration got a little more elaborate. The style of illustratrion was classic children story style. The characters tended to be somewhat rotund and thereby comical. The strip lasted for over 30 years never waivering from the mischief/resolution formula. The market for Peter Rabbit is moderately good. Offered as both halfs and fulls, collectors look for nice color fulls. The market for the rarer daily columns is much stronger and are very hard to keep in stock. | ||||

| Pete the Tramp by CD Russell (0625-) 1st appearance January 10, 1932 - Pete the Tramp was the comic creation of CD Russell. Beginning in 1932 during the Great Depression when a overlarge portion of the country were living in destitution, Pete the Tramp portrayed that lifestyle with stark reality blended into the intended humor. Pete lived the homeless lifestyle, scrounging for places to stay, meals, and the occasional job. Some of the decisions that Pete made that were designed to bring a chuckle, but could not be duplicated in the current econcomy without raising some eyebrows regarding appropriateness. Public focus on world events in the World War II ended the poiniancy of the gags and the strip passed into history. The market for Pete the Tramp is somewhat thin. Nice runs can be obtained at very reasonable prices. | ||||

| Phantom, The by Lee Falk and Ray Moore (0630-) 1st appearance February 17, 1936, 1st Sunday May 28, 1939 - The Phantom was the story of the latest in a geneological line of sons who donned the purple costume and black mask of the protector of the Indian jungles. Spurred by an act of Piracy some 400 years ago by the Singh Pirates, the line of the Phantoms was born. The classic storyline created by Lee Falk set the standard for international adventure and crime fighting. Accompanied by his faithful companion 'Devil', a pet wolf, the "Ghost who walks" was Kit Walker (actually he was Chris Standish first - Lee Falk took some editorial liberties in changing his persona after a time). The love of the Phantom's life is Diana Palmer, a blonde socialite adventurer who captured Kit's heart before he inherited his Phantom mantle. Together they shared a good portion of The Phantom's adventures which usually meant 3-4 month-long continuity stories. The artwork for the Phantom was certainly classic golden age style. Ray Moore contributed the best stretch of the strip until World War II intervened, afterward the strip would change hands to many different artists. The constant on the strip was the creator and writer Lee Falk. Falk would continue to contribute on the storylines into the current decade - close to 70 years on the strip, nothing less than remarkable. The market for The Phantom is very hot. Daillies are very hard to keep in stock and sell at a reasonably high premium - early strips are very difficult to get and command a very high premium. Sundays also sell at a premium very well. Offered as Tabs, Halves or smaller, High Premium sundays include the 1939, first-year pages and any page where the classic origin (with the orginal Phantom swearing his oath on the skull of his father's murderer) is reproduced. | ||||

| Pogo (Possum) by Walt Kelly (0635-) 1st daily Appearance October 4, 1948, 1st Sunday January 30, 1950 - Walt Kelly's Pogo was the classic example of integration of modern day satire into a delightful comic-strip. Pogo and his best buddy Albert Alligator were the stars of the show in the middle of the Okefenokee Swamp. The swamp that Pogo lived in was home to hundreds of interesting characters who usually reflected a particular opinion on a subject high in the news of the day. Pogo and Albert had stereotypical drawl vocalisms, big hearts, and sensible observation skills . Kelly enigineered the characters so that they would often not realize that they were reflecting the intended criticisms of the strip of the day. The strip is considered one of the high political satires ever drawn, the character Pogo himself ran for president a number of times garnering more than just a couple of votes. The artwork of Walt Kelly also goes a long way in the popularity of the strip. The Okefenokee swamp characters were drawn clean and cute with the exaggerated facial expression that make them funny to just look at. The market for Pogo is very strong. Offered as tabs, halves or smaller, Tabs are considered premium for the long-time Pogo collectors. Daillies which are a little less common sell even better than sundays. | ||||
