| Little Orphan Annie by Harold
Grey (0480-) - 1st Appearance August 5, 1924, 1st Sunday November 2, 1924 - If
optimism had a face in the comics, it was Little Orphan Annie. Annie was
created in 1924 by Harold Gray, an aspiring and talented cartoonist in the Tribune
bullpen. Only starting as an orphan, Annie would partner with her ever-present
dog Sandy and her adoptive father Oliver 'Daddy' Warbucks on a marvelous series of
adventures. Annie was the most perceptive adolescent ever, she could smell a
rat from miles away. Gray had Annie portraying american values at every turn.
She was hard-working, honest and upstanding almost to a fault.
Annie's adventures would take her trotting the globe where she reflected an infectuous and
distinct 'can-do' attitude, but she would always return home to her beloved USA in the
end. The market for Little Orphan Annie is moderate, collectors jump on story-long
runs when available. Because of this, dailies are actually a bit stronger sellers
than sundays. The popularity of the strip meant it was carried in an
enormous number of newspapers, so supply is ample and helps to keep prices
reasonable and attractive. Premium strips are pretty much limited to the
earliest strips in the series. Note; Harold Gray willed his near-complete
collection of original artwork to his college alma mater. This tends to
inflate prices on the limited available original artwork. In most cases, strips or
strip reprints are the most available way to enjoy Harold Gray's classics. |
