Betty by C.A. Voight (0060-) 1st Appearance 1919 - Charles (CA) Voight created Betty in the late 1910’s. One of the earliest of the flapper strips of the roaring 20’s, Betty lasted long past the flapper period into the early 1940’s.  Betty was a lavishly drawn strip. CA Voight was an absolute master of loose line drawing and Betty was his greatest achievement. The strip was largely a gag strip, the artwork is definitely the attraction. The long-legged Betty had a stirring attractiveness that few other 20’s flappers had.   Because the strip did not contain a multi-strip story-line, collectors seem quite satisfied to choose sample pages based on individual page artwork. Better artwork fulls from the 1920’s are the most popular, smaller versions move more slowly.

Betty Boop (Boop-Boop-a-Doop Girl) by Ving Fuller & Bud Counihan (0065-) 1st Appearance July 23, 1934 - Betty Boop was created based on a real-life rags-to-riches 1920's stage actress named Helen Kane.  Kane's impish style which made her attractive to audiences was first translated sensationally into animated cartoons by the great Max Fleischer.   Evolving from a dog into a movie star,  the popularity of the cartoons would give King Features a good reason to get Betty onto the sunday comics page in 1934.   The strip was entirely a gag strip which revolved around Betty's antics on her many movie sets.  Throughout her 3-year run, Betty would show the bold-faced Marilyn-like sexuality that captivated the public.   As flapper tastes waned in the late 1930's,  so did the popularity of Betty.   But Betty would return as the nostalgia icon she is today.  You can see Betty's short-skirted figure in virtually every novelty store in the country.   It is that nolstalgia tie-in that drives the popularity of her comics.  Betty's sundays are considered very high premium rivaling the best titles in comics.  Sundays which were offered as tabs, sell very well at high premium.  Dailies sell even better and are very difficult to find.

Beyond Mars by Jack Williamson & Lee Elias (0067-) 1st Appearance February 17, 1952 - In the early 1950's, Science Fiction was as popular as ever.  The names of great Science Fiction writers like Arthur C. Clarke and Isaac Asimov would sell millions of pulp digests.   The New York Daily News sought to take adventage of this by signing up popular Sci-fi writer Jack Williamson to create an exclusive Sunday-only feature, Beyond Mars.   Beyond Mars was an action/adventure continuity strip in space.   The stars of the action were Mike Flint and his green Venusian partner Sam Smith.    Together they would fight evil villains across the galaxy.   The villains were often exaggerated corrupt caricatures which were largely much more interesting that the protagonists themselves.    The fine artwork of the strip was provided by Lee Elias, a veteran of the fabulous EC comics bullpen.    The market for Beyond Mars is excellent.  Offered exclusively as Tabs and Half-tabs, these are very hard to keep in stock even at high premium.   The value of the strip escalates due to the popular Sci-fi theme,  the great period artwork, and the rarity of a strip that was featured in only a single newspaper for only 3 and 1/2 years.
