The Spirit by Will Eisner  (1330-) 1st Appearance June 2nd 1940, 1st Daily October 13, 1941 - The Spirit was the ultimate breakthrough is cartoon storytelling.  The Spirit was presented as a full-story insert in the newspaper sections of the 40's.  Will Eisner, the Spirit's creator,  used the freedom of space to let his imagination run free.   The result was a comic strip that went beyond the traditional comic panel and broke new ground in storyboards, lettering and content.  Centered around a hard-boiled masked detective named Denny Colt, the Spirit was much more than a detective series.    Eisner used his storytelling to explore the boundaries of whimsy, science and parapsychology.   Each week's offering was an exploration into an new aspect of the human condition.   The genious of Eisner was that he could entertain so successfully while weaving his allegories.  Eisner wrote the Spirit throughout the run of the strip with an interlude for his war committment 1943-45.  A roster of cartooning all-stars contributed to the Spirit's success which included names like Jules Feiffer, Lou Fine, Jack Cole and Wally Wood.    The strip would die in the 1950's due to the economics surrounding the ambitious insert format, but that death was never complete.  Like the main character, the strip would resurrect in comic-book and magazine format a number of times.  To this day, collectors are lucky enough to be able to find anthologies of the Spirit's adventures on comics shop shelves.  The market for The Spirit is very good.  All versions sell well, although collectors will favor the episodes that were actually drawn by Eisner.  Dailies sell as fast as sunday even at high premium.

The Spirit - Dailies
A note about the following Spirit Selections:  The Spirit was published  in Newspapers of the 1940's and 50's in a number of formats.  The most common is comic-book size (CB) pre-trimmed and folded.   This format usually included side-strips like Mr. Mystic & Lady Luck.  Other formats included Tabloid-size (T) pre-trimmed and folded (Rarest and the most desirable), and untrimmed on fulls (2F).   The untrimmed fulls (2F) would contain 8 comic story pages arranged on 2 full-size newspaper comic pages.    Depending on Orientation, they may or may not be able to be folded and trimmed into comic book size.  Sometimes the reverse would not contain Mr. Mystic or the other normal side-strips.   Unless noted, the 2F size listed below cannot be folded into comic size.   Note that "CB" format sections are graded by Comic Book standards.   All other formats are graded by newspaper standards.
